Charge Pipe Performance Replacements For The VW/Audi EA888 Engine 17-128 &17-129

March 08, 2022 2 min read

The Volkswagen Group introduced its Audi designed EA888 engine in 2007 as a 1.8L turbo engine before adding a 2.0L version in 2008 to power many of its mainline vehicles. The third generation of this award winning engine comes lighter while producing more power with less fuel consumption over its predecessors. Because of its capabilities, enthusiasts have made modifications to push out even more power with tunes and upgrades for this popular motor. With a wide range of vehicles under the MQB platform, aftermarket parts for the EA888 are a common find.

The Weakest Link
Our expertise in engineering induction system enhancements led us to open up the hood of an Mk7 Volkswagen GTI and see what this iconic engine was all about. After much research and time driving the hot hatch, we found that one downside is how brittle the factory plastic charge pipes were and the negative effects it can have on the engine -- reduced power output, check engine light illuminating, plastic shrapnel entering the engine, getting stranded on the side of the road.

Product Development
We got to work on developing more durable replacements that could withstand more boost without cracking, leaking, or bursting. We utilized 2 ½” mandrel bent aluminum tubing to allow for maximum air delivery whereas the stock restrictive charge pipes acted as bottlenecks. The cold side charge pipe also features a ⅛” NPT bung to allow the addition of sensors, gauges, and water injection. The HPS Charge Pipe Kit features aluminum tubing bead rolls at each end to keep the 4-ply oil-resistant silicone couplers from slipping off under boost. Paired with the included stainless steel embossed hose clamps, boost leaks are now a thing of the past.
