HPS Performance Drop-In Air Filters - How to Maintain Your Filter for the Long Haul

April 12, 2022 2 min read

Now that your new performance panel filter is installed, how do you keep it from becoming less effective over time?

Maintaining your washable filter is essential to maintaining proper filtration while still allowing for plenty of air to reach the engine. We recommend picking up our HPS Performance Air Filter Cleaning and Synthetic Oil Recharge Kit when it’s time to give your filter a refresh. Our two part kit includes a non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning solution and a synthetic oil specially designed to attract dirt particles onto the mesh screen of the filter.

How to Clean Your HPS Performance Drop-In Air Filter

Firstly, you’ll need to remove any debris from the filter by tapping the bottom side of the filter onto a flat surface. Do not use compressed air to blow debris out as it can damage the cotton filtration element.

Once the debris is cleared, spray the cleaning solution onto the bottom side of the air filter before letting it sit for 15 minutes.

Next, rinse the air filter by running it under low-pressure water to flush out any remaining dirt. Repeat the process if the air filter is extremely dirty. Gently shake the filter to remove any excess water.

Set the air filter aside to dry. A fan may be used to speed up the process but avoid using heat or direct sunlight as it can shrink the cotton. Do not put it under direct heat or in the sun as the cotton can shrink and compromise your filter's effectiveness.

Once the filter is dry, carefully spray one side of the filter with the synthetic oil. Spray either side but do not spray both. One spray from the bottle will service approximately 2 square inches of the filter. Spray the oil onto the filter from 3-4 inches away.

NOTE: Our oil is designed to color your filter red in order to be sure that it is applied correctly

It will look blotchy at first so allow the oil to absorb into the cotton element for 15-20 minutes. Lightly touch up any missed areas. Once the oil is a consistent finish, you may wipe off any excess oil and reinstall the air filter onto your air box.
